Network Engineer
Network Engineer II USDA-13
Location: USDA; Washington, DC
Type: Full-time
 
Objective

Tier II Team member and Network Engineer responsible for assisting with the daily operations and maintenance of national and international network infrastructures for the United States Department of Agriculture, Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA FAS). Assist with monitoring and configuring a variety of Cisco/Foundry network routers/switches for optimal performance and high availability. Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with the client, end users and fellow team members to proactively diagnose, troubleshoot and remediate network related issues. 

 
Essential Job Functions:
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of network communications.
  • Uses knowledge of LAN/WAN systems to help design and install internal and external networks.
  • Tests and evaluates network systems to eliminate problems and implement improvements.
  • Maintain and update VPN’s and encryption devices to be current with latest released, security updates and configurations.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot VPN’s and encryption devices to maximize performance, minimize unauthorized access, and minimize denial of service attacks.
  • Review VPN’s and encryption device logs in accordance with requirements
  • Implement and customize new hardware as needed/requested
  • Customize storage HW to satisfy customer requests
  • Support and infrastructure that allows data traffic to flow between the data centers, field sites, headquarters, and customers sites
  • Support the switches, hubs and cabling that are within the USDA FAS purview
  • Interface with the CONU/OCONUS internet and other service providers to maintain the connections that exist at overseas post locations
  • Perform physical inspection of equipment to verify the power state, error condition of equipment and other general onsite technical assistance required for diagnosing problems.
  • Upon direction of the Government POC, physical replacement of LAN/WAN hardwarecomponents.
  • Advanced knowledge of IP protocols and technologies
  • Knowledgeable of industry leading IP networking products (Juniper/Cisco)
  • Provide engineering analysis and support for VPN’s, routers, networks and operating systems
  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within field
  • Works under general supervision, relies on current experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.
 
Job Specifications and Requirements:
  • BS degree in area of special
  • Current Cisco Certified Network Professional certification
  • 2-5 years experience in the field or related area
